New findings suggest that, finally, Google Pixel devices may add a manual option to the Now Playing feature by using a new Quick Settings tile.
One of the longest-running features of Google Pixel phones is “Now Playing,” an ambient feature that automatically detects music in the environment around you and reports it back via your lock screen. It’s a really useful little tool, but also one that hasn’t changed much since its debut on the Pixel 2 series.
It appears, though, that Google has one quality-of-life feature incoming, and one that’s been long overdue.
The folks over at Android Authority spotted a new Quick Settings tile for Now Playing on Pixel in an update to Android System Intelligence. This functionality isn’t live yet, but the tile will show up in Quick Settings when it debuts and be able to trigger the manual identification of a song on demand. As it stands today, manual identification can be done through the lock screen by tapping on the icon, but it’s not all that intuitive, and it means that you can’t be using your phone and start a search.

Notably, there’s already a “Song Search” shortcut powered by the Google app, but Now Playing would provide an option that works in the background rather than taking over the display.
As mentioned, this isn’t live right now, but it will certainly be a welcome addition whenever it does arrive.
