Various Google services on top of the mobile operating system make up the modern Android experience. Google is now adding a new ‘System services’ settings page to manage all the background services installed on your Android device and more easily update them.
This new “System services” page will list all the services/applications (with most not having user interfaces) from Google that help keep your phone or tablet running. Improve user transparency and centralizing management (instead of having to search Settings > Apps), this includes:
- Adaptive Connective Services
- Android System Intelligence: Live Caption, Smart Reply, more
- Android System Key Verifier: Coming to Google Messages
- Android System SafetyCore: Sensitive Content Warnings in Google Messages
- Cross-Device Services: Android app streaming on Chromebooks
- Device Connectivity Service: Notification sync between the Pixel Tablet and phones
- Device Health Services
- Google Play services: Fast Pair, Quick Share, Unknown Tracker Alerts
- Google Play Services for AR: ARCore
- Settings Services
Google system services give you useful features that make your Android devices more secure and reliable.
Google provides monthly release notes for these updates. The new System services list is split into Available updates, Not installed, and Up to date. For the most part, they update automatically in the background, but previously you had to visit the Play Store listing to immediately install the latest version. Google notes how turning off system services “may impact your device’s performance.”
This page also notes if you’re part of the Google system services beta. In September, Google made it so that signing up for the Play services beta (via the Play Store) gets you early access to all Google system services as they’re available.
The new “System services” page will be available on Android 6+ and is rolling out now, with those in the aforementioned beta getting it first. Once available, find the page in the Settings app > tap your profile (top card on Android 16) > All services tab > Privacy & security setting > System services.
