A BUSY weekend of celebrations are being planned in Lymm to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A four day bank holiday will take place from June 2 to 5 with Lymm Parish Council organising the main event on the Thursday, June 2.

Nationally, events include the Big Jubilee Lunch, encouraging residents to have street parties and The Platinum Jubilee Beacons will see towns and villages across the country celebrating the Queen’s reign with a beacon lighting event.

Lymm Parish Council is planning to hold such an event and is collating a handy schedule of all Jubilee themed events that will be held across the village as well as providing support for residents wishing to hold their own street parties.

The festivities will start at 2pm on June 2 with Town Crier, Peter Powell, reading an official proclamation from Lymm Cross followed by tea and cakes in the village hall.

The evening will see the main Lymm event with the roads closing at the Lower Dam from 8pm. In partnership with Lymm Radio, the evening will consist of songs from each of the Queen’s seven decades on the throne as well as performances from the choirs of Lymm.

A piper and bugler will precede the official beacon lighting which takes place at 9.45pm.

Immediately after the beacon lighting, the choirs of Lymm will unite to sing the official song for The Commonwealth - A Life filled with Grace.

The evening will finish with a community sing song of God Save The Queen and Land of Hope and Glory, led by Lymm’s choirs.

As part of the celebrations there will be awards for the best dressed in 1950s fashions.

Participants are to register at the event HQ at 8.30pm, with results being announced during the evening. There will also be a best-dressed shop window competition and best shield design competition, with the template available from the parish council.

The parish council is also planning to light up the lower dam with willow lanterns for the event. As part of this, there will be a number of lantern making workshops at the village hall and groups and residents are encouraged to make their own willow lanterns.

A souvenir booklet is being prepared by the parish council which will contain information about the events across Lymm as well the history of the jubilee in Lymm and will be delivered to every home in Lymm.

A legacy project will be planned.

Souvenir booklet sponsorship and advertising are currently being accepted.
