A major road has been closed after a tree fell onto two cars.

Police said the A49 Wigan Road, close to Bamber Bridge, is closed from Shady Lane to the junction of the A6 Lostock Lane, in both directions due to the incident, which happened around 7.30am today.

A tree fell on two cars in Wigan Road in Bamber Bridge and left two people trapped, with the fire service being required to free both people. 

No injuries were reported but a woman driving another vehicle suffered a minor head injury. 

Officers expect the road will be closed for some time and are advising people to drive down Lydiate Lane if they need to access the A6.

A yellow weather warning for high winds of up to 70mph was issued for Lancashire overnight, bringing with it some destruction - such as trees being uprooted.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called around 7.35am today after a tree had fallen on two cars in Wigan Road, Bamber Bridge.

"Two people were initially trapped in one vehicle and later freed by the fire service. No injuries were reported.

"A woman driving another vehicle suffered a minor head injury during the incident.

"Please be aware that Wigan Road, A49 is closed from Shady Lane to the junction of the A6, Lostock Lane in both directions.

"This will be closed for sometime.

"Any traffic wanting to divert to get to the A6, please divert down Lydiate Lane.

"Please avoid the area where possible.

"Thank you for your patience."
