Erik ten Hag and Patrick Vieira led their teams out of the Old Trafford tunnel on Saturday before laying wreaths near the centre circle to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

United welcomed Palace to M16 just two days before the anniversary of the disaster in which 23 people died. Eight United players plus three of the coaching staff were killed in the crash.

Earlier this week, the club confirmed plans to commemorate the anniversary with a minute's silence and the wearing of black armbands.

Furthermore, the families of those lost as well as those affected were invited to the game, with flags flying at half-mast as a gesture of respect. A rendition of 'The Flowers of Manchester' played as the teams walked out of the tunnel and a giant surfer banner was unfurled in the Stretford End showing the words ‘We’ll never die’.

Managers of both clubs led their teams out of the tunnel at Old Trafford amid a subdued atmosphere, with Ten Hag and Vieira laying wreaths at the centre circle. Referee Andre Marriner blew his whistle to begin a minute's silence which was observed impeccably by all inside the stadium.
