Hearn promises to revisit Croker for future Katie Taylor fight but admits 'bad taste' over talks

Katie Taylor's promoter Eddie Hearn has promised to revisit a Croke Park fight for the undisputed lightweight champion ahead of her homecoming in Dublin in May, despite a "bad taste" over the original talks breaking down.

History was set to be made for a second bout between Taylor and Amanda Serrano following the Fight of the Year winner in 2022, with GAA headquarters lined up for the event.

It would have been the biggest ever boxing match on Irish shores and indeed worldwide in terms of audience numbers and gate receipts, but it broke down over a disagreement about costs between Hearn's company and the GAA.

Serrano then suffered an injury to definitively rule out the venue with Taylor now fighting undisputed super-lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron in a bid to become a two-weight undisputed boxer.

Tickets will go on sale next week with a capacity of between 8,000 to 9,000, something Hearn admits will cause difficulties.

Hearn said: "I think the 3Arena is perfect [for now]. Obviously we are going to have a problem next week with tickets as we can’t sell [more than around 8,000].

"You will have a lot of upset people and I have it all the time when you have a sellout. So we will have a problem with demand.

"We are unfortunately leaving money behind going to this arena because it holds 8,000 versus 70,000 at Croke Park and there was other options outside there but there is obviously a rugby match [the Heineken Champions Cup final] that weekend as well.

"I think it has worked out well [though]. I would honestly like to say that this is a one-off but I don’t think it’s the last time that we will see Katie Taylor fight in Ireland, for sure."

Asked whether he would consider Croke Park for a future bout, Hearn gave a definitive yes, but also admitted there are still ill feelings over how talks broke down in trying to make Taylor-Serrano in the biggest stadium in Ireland.

The GAA highlighted security costs for the first major boxing show in Ireland in several years, something the Englishman thought was too expensive compared to UK stadiums.

Croke Park remains a dream rather than a reality for Katie Taylor for now

Hearn said: "When you are going to negotiate with someone and the cost is three times more than Wembley Stadium… to be honest with you, I think it takes the absolute p***.

"We have done national stadiums, we have done 90,000, 80,000. Numbers are numbers and for three times the cost of running a show there [compared to others] it just left a little bit of bad taste but that is our problem, not Katie's problems.

"She wanted to fight at Croke Park and we will work to make that happen but what I am not prepared to do is be involved in a fight of that magnitude, with a huge amount of risk and work, for nothing for our family business.

"For me, you don’t go into a show of that magnitude to lose a lot of money. And just like Katie Taylor, we will make sure that she gets the right deal when she fights. It’s the same for any business."

During the discussions and debate over how to bridge the gap between Croke Park and Matchroom, UFC fighter Conor McGregor offered assistance that led to Hearn visiting the Dubliner for a meeting.

Hearn insisted it was merely a sponsorship discussion rather than thoughts of getting involved in a Katie Taylor event.

He added: "When we say 'adding his name to fight’ we mean one of his companies, one of his brands, may sponsor the fight.

"That’s as far as it goes. We don’t need him to sell the fight out. We don’t need him to be part of the promotion. I just take people as I find them and I see a genuine character that really is excited by the event and wants to support Katie so you are not going to see him at press conferences and walking out Katie Taylor. It’s not that kind of association. It’s a case of, 'if I can help’."

Taylor was asked her feelings on McGregor tying into making one of her fights and if she would be happy with such an arrangement.

She paused for several seconds, before allowing Hearn to provide a more fulsome answer.

The promoter reiterated: "Like I said, it’s not the Conor McGregor show. He reached out to help in any way and if he is to support the event commercially, fantastic, but it’s obviously the Katie Taylor show."
