9-year-old girl dies by suicide in Tamil Nadu after parents ask her to study

The incident happened in Tiruvallur district Tuesday night. The Class 4 student was playing outside when the parents asked her to get inside the house and study.

A nine-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district allegedly died by suicide Tuesday (March 28) after her parents instructed her to study, said the police.

According to the Thiruvallur Town police, on Tuesday around 8 pm, when the Class 4 student was playing outside her grandmother’s house, her parents Krishnamoorthy and Karpagam asked her to get inside the house and study as she had been playing for a long time. After handing her the house key, the parents left for a nearby market area to purchase groceries, the police said.

When they returned home, they found the door locked from the inside. Despite them knocking on the door several times, the gird did not open the door, the police said. The parents finally broke the door and found the girl in an unconscious state. They rushed her to Tiruvallur Government hospital, where she was declared dead, the police added.

The police said a case was registered under Section 174 (to inquire and report on suicide) of CrPC. Though local media reports noted that the deceased used to be active on Instagram and upload reels regularly, an official noted that the parents did not provide any such information to them. The official added that the deceased also has a six-year-old younger brother.
