The Leicestershire town of Melton is well known for its food and drink, and a new venue is preparing to impress customers with its freshly-prepared meals and treats, and locally roasted coffee. Family-run business Kitchen and Coffee will soon be launching in Sherrard Street, in the premises formerly occupied by bookmakers Coral - and we've been in for a sneak peek.

Customers can look forward to an array of homemade delights, from cakes and sandwiches to cooked breakfasts and Sunday roasts. It will be the second branch of the independent business, which already has a site in Grantham.

The original cafe opened in October 2018 and due to its success, the family behind the business have decided it is now time to expand the operation. One of the owners, Henry Young-Alls, told LeicestershireLive that Melton was an ideal location, being a lively town with plenty going on.

The building is spacious and bright, having been stripped right back, with cladded ceilings removed and brick walls and original beams exposed. The style is described as "traditional with an industrial twist" by Henry, who was keen to maintain the character of the building.

As well as the stylish surroundings, you'll notice interesting finishing touches including an old safe, which was discovered by the owners when the refurbishment was being carried out, and a piano, which was donated by a customer at the Grantham branch.

With lots of tables and chairs and a couple of colourful sofas, there's plenty of room for drinkers and diners. The area immediately as you walk in is aimed at those wanting to pop in for a cuppa and a slice of homemade cake - with options likely to include carrot cake and Victoria sandwich.

Coffee is supplied by Nottingham-based roasters Coffee Central. It is a house blend, specific to Kitchen and Coffee, so you won't get the same blend anywhere else.

The larger area towards the rear of the cafe is for those wanting to while away the hours enjoying a freshly-prepared meal - whether that's breakfast or lunch. Breakfast will be served all day, every day - meaning that if you're visiting on Sunday, you could treat yourself to a full English (with vegetarian and vegan versions available) whilst your partner enjoys a roast dinner.

Other breakfast options include a breakfast bagel, eggs Benedict, or in-house baked granola with Greek yoghurt and fresh strawberries. Lunch options include a vegan poke bowl - a dish based on rice, a protein and sauce - steak poke bowl, classic chicken Caesar salad, steak and Stilton ciabatta and fish finger sarnie.

According to Henry, all the food is freshly-prepared in house, using locally-sourced ingredients, from the fruit and vegetables to the eggs and meat. He said he was hoping to provide Melton with an "upmarket cafe" where customers can enjoy freshly-prepared meals, locally roasted coffee and homemade cake all in one place.

Kitchen and Coffee will open for the first time on Monday, April 3. Regular opening hours will be 9am until 5pm Monday to Saturday and 9am until 4pm Sunday.
