Whether you're treating yourself to a takeaway or taking the family out for a meal, you want to be sure that the place you're buying from is in tip-top condition. It's good to know, then, that environmental health officers from local councils inspect all food businesses, and rank them using the national food hygiene rating scheme.

The ratings are based on areas such as handling, storage and preparation of food, cleanliness of facilities and how well food safety issues are managed. Thankfully, a large number of places in the city and county have achieved the maximum of five stars.

Sometimes, however, if a business isn't meeting the required standards, a one or even zero rating is handed out - and in recent weeks this has happened a few times across our area. A zero star rating means an establishment needs to make urgent improvements.
