Farewell, Ira Bhaskar: Teacher par excellence

It was with a mix of trepidation and excitement that I joined the School of Arts and Aesthetics (SAA) in JNU in 2011. I came from an English literature background, and at the time, film studies was a discipline that was relatively new in India. Except for a few places like Jadavpur, JMI and JNU, there weren’t many universities that offered specialised courses in film studies.

Knowing that Ira Bhaskar, one of the two faculty (the other was Ranjani Mazumdar) who taught in the Cinema Studies area in SAA, previously taught English literature at University of Delhi was a great solace, since to me, it signified that switching from literature to film studies was actually possible. Express Opinion | Why is Kejriwal so strident, how sticky is Opposition’s new Rahul glue against Modi?

Who would have thought that Arvind Kejriwal would be among the first to support Rahul Gandhi after his disqualification — forgetting the Congress had welcomed Manish Sisodia’s arrest? Or that a mollified “Didi” would stand by Rahul when she repeatedly spurned overtures from the Congress? Or that a miffed Shiv Sena would readily forgive Rahul despite his repeated attacks on Veer Savarkar and Rahul, in turn, would promise to tone down his criticism of their icon?

During the last one week, the Opposition leaders have taken significant steps towards creating a solidarity. They feel threatened, apprehensive that disqualification is a fate that can befall any of them. It goes without saying that the BJP will worry if the Opposition sticks together. But how strong is their new-found glue? Read The Neerja Chowdhury Column

Days after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal with a defamation case, the AAP chief reached Guwahati on Sunday and invited the BJP leader for tea and lunch at his residence in the national capital.

Kejriwal also said such threats by Sarma are unbecoming of a chief minister. 'People of Assam are very good. They welcome their guests. Himanta Biswa Sarma should learn from them,' the Delhi CM said immediately after landing at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, reacting to Sarma's remarks.

Sarma had on Friday threatened to file a defamation case against Kejriwal if the Aam Aadmi Party leader alleged corruption cases against him outside the assembly. 'Let Kejriwal come here on April 2 and say that I am corrupt. The next day, I will file a defamation case against him as I have done against (AAP leader) Manish Sisodia,'' Sarma had said. Read more

Congress de facto ‘fulcrum’; if in leadership, I would encourage smaller party to play convenor of Oppn alliance for 2024, says Shashi Tharoor

Welcoming the recent “wave of Opposition unity”, Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor said the Congress will “de facto” be the fulcrum around which other parties converge, but asserted that if he were in the party leadership, he would not “crow about it” and encourage one of the smaller outfits to play the role of convenor of an alliance to take on the BJP in the 2024 general election.

In an interview with PTI, Tharoor said Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a 2019 defamation case has generated a “surprising wave of Opposition unity” with many parties having begun to feel the truth of the adage — “united we stand, divided we fall”. How Yamuna Expressway authority’s housing project became no man’s land

“Escape the crowds… Think of living where there is an endless supply of fresh air,” reads the tagline of Residential Plot Scheme 1 — the earliest residential plot project of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Develo-pment Authority (YEIDA) issued in 2009. Fourteen years on, true to the announcement, the area is crowd-free; the air around here, too, is fresher than many others in the region. There is just one problem, though: There is no sign of any settlement in the vast stretch of land — spread across sectors 18 and 20 of YEIDA in Gautam Buddh Nagar district — acquired for the scheme.

YEIDA’s ambitious plan to develop a sprawling residential society with over 20,000 plots along the Yamuna Expressway has seen its fair share of hiccups — protests, litigation and multiple rounds of revisions in provisions of the scheme. The authority had acquired land from 14 villages for the project but it is mostly lying vacant.

It was early on March 7 that Ajeet Singh (45) met with a road accident while coming back on his two-wheeler after seeing his mother in Chandan Vihar.

The Kalyanpuri resident was left severely injured in the spine and his daughter Simran Kaur (21) and son Harshdeep Singh (19) rushed him to the Safdarjung Hospital.

Kaur told The Indian Express: “We took him to the emergency department around 6 am on March 8 and doctors there referred us to neurosurgeon Dr Manish Rawat who told us our father needs an immediate spine surgery and a surgical rod needs to be fixed.”
