The British Soap awards returns to our screens tonight with the stars attending a glitzy ceremony in Salford hosted by Yorkshire's own Jane McDonald.

Clad in a a gold sequinned floor-length gown, Jane McDonald said it was her “dream job” after taking up the role to replace Phillip Schofield. Schofield pulled out of the awards amid the controversy of admitting he had an affair with a younger colleague.

Schofield had previously hosted the soap celebration every year since 2006 but has since parted ways with ITV including their Soap Awards event. Jane McDonald was then brought in and announced as the new host of the awards ceremony.

It has been another dramatic year in soapland, Dot Branning left Eastenders following June Brown's death, while Ryan Prescott became the victim of an acid attack on Coronation Street. Despite Emmerdale's 50th anniversary celebrations the soap went home with just one award.

That award saw one of its most recognisable stars walk home with a very special gong. The awards will be broadcast at 8pm tonight (Tuesday, June 6) at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
