Ireland head coach Richie Murphy has named a largely settled side for Saturday's opening game of the World Rugby U20 Championship in South Africa against England (12.30pm).

Murphy's starting team for the game in Paarl shows just two changes from the XV that took to the field against the same opposition in Ireland's Six Nations Grand Slam game in March.

Leinster's Gus McCarthy continues in his role as captain, joined by new Munster recruit George Hadden, and Leinster's Paddy McCarthy in the front row.

Evan O'Connell comes into the side at second row, with Diarmuid Mangan dropping to the back row and Brian Gleeson moving to the bench. O'Connell is joined at lock by Conor O'Tighearnaigh, who has been a staple of the back-to-back Grand Slam winning sides.

Ruadhan Quinn and James McNabney partner Mangan in the back row.

Leinster pair Fintan Gunne and Sam Prendergast continue their half-back partnership from the Six Nations, as do John Devine and Hugh Cooney in the centre.

Andrew Osborne, brother of Irish senior squad member Jamie, comes onto the right wing in place of James Nicholson, with Hugh Gavin and Henry McErlean completing the back three.

Hooker Max Clein is set to make his U20 debut off the bench.

Ireland face Six Nations rivals England in their opening Pool B game in Paarl, before taking on Australia (29 June) and Fiji (4 July).

The three pool winners and the best runner-up will advance to the semi-finals.

The 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship is the first installment of the junior World Cup since 2019.
