A woman has appeared in court charged with seriously assaulting her mother.

Nadine McCready is accused of attacking her mother at a high rise block of flats in the Benwell area of Newcastle. The incident is alleged to have occurred on Tuesday night.

On Thursday afternoon, the 34-year-old appeared in the remand court at Newcastle Magistrates' Court. McCready, who was wearing a grey top and a black puffer coat, was brought into the dock by an officer.

The court in Newcastle heard how McCready was accused of grievous bodily harm with intent. Paul Doney, prosecuting, told the court how she was living with her mother at the time of the alleged offence.

No pleas were entered during the short hearing and her case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court. McCready, of Milford Road, Benwell, was handed bail until the hearing takes place next month.

District Judge Paul Currer told her: "You're charged with an offence that's so serious you can only be dealt with at the crown court. I'm sending you to Newcastle Crown Court to appear there on the 26th October at 10 o'clock in the morning."

Northumbria Police said a woman was taken to hospital following a report of an alleged assault at Adelaide House on Gill Street shortly before 11pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the force said: "It was reported that the female victim had suffered injuries to her head and face. Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening."
