A man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman.

Jamie Carruthers appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning. The 28-year-old is charged with raping a woman in Newcastle.

No pleas were entered by Carruthers, of Carwarding Place, Blakelaw, Newcastle, during the short hearing. District Judge Paul Currer told him his case would be sent straight to Newcastle Crown Court.

He told Carruthers: "You're charged with such a serious offence it can't be dealt with at this court, it has to go to the crown court.

"You will next appear before the crown court on the 6th December - four weeks from today - at 10 o'clock in the morning. You must attend at that time."

Carruthers was handed conditional bail until the hearing at Newcastle Crown Court next month.
