The shocking discovery was made on Bloom Street in Manchester's Gay Village on Sunday, December 3. Officers were called to the scene at 10.20am, however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious. His cause of death, however, has not yet been determined with the investigation in its "early stages".

The tragedy came during a yellow weather warning issued for snow and ice by the Met Office. A forensic tent was erected at the scene while officers were pictured guarding a cordon.

Onlookers told our sister title, the Manchester Evening News, that the man was found slumped on steps in a doorway between the Village Chippy and Roadie's fast-food takeaway, near to a taxi rank. One man who walked past the scene at around 9am said he saw the person, who is known in the area, in the doorway and that he assumed he was asleep.

He said: "I spotted him and thought he was sleeping. I've been here since this morning. A couple came out of the car park opposite and went over to him and he didn't flinch or move at all, so they rung the ambulance."

A report on the man's death and a file of evidence is being prepared for the coroner's office in Manchester.

It comes after another man, believed to have been homeless and living in his car, froze to death in the vehicle in Beeston, Nottinghamshire.
