Few will remember the name of the defunct social media platform Friendster. It launched in 2002 and is considered the original social media network. Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook two years later, with essentially the same functions allowing users to connect, share content, message and comment with other members via profiles and networks.
Today, Zuckerberg is worth $139bn, and Friendster’s relatively anonymous founder, Jonathan Abrams, has a net worth of approximately $30m. Friendster failed because the infrastructure it required to function wasn’t accessible at the time. By the time Facebook was launched, internet speeds had increased significantly and Friendster users had already jumped ship. Timing was everything.
