Her political career may be over, but Mary Coughlan has never been as busy and is relishing her new position as Donegal chairperson

It is almost 15 years since Mary Coughlan and photographer Steve Humphreys crossed paths. “Long time no see,” she says to him, “could you not have used a picture of me from 20 years ago? I’m sure you have plenty, and I would be looking better.”
The former Tánaiste has taken a seat in front of a blazing fire in Buswells Hotel as Humphreys sets up. Heads turn, as she is recognised; there are less than conspicuous whispers and curious glances.
