Fiber optic coverage has increased from 17% in 2022 to around 34% in the current year, as announced by the Senate Department for Economics on Thursday. Access means that the fiber optic network has been laid to the private property of these households. By 2028, all 2.2 million households in Berlin should be connected accordingly.

More than a third of all Berlin households now have access to the capital's fiber optic network.
Gigabit coverage over 95.3 percent
Gigabit coverage, which enables download speeds of up to one gigabit per second, was already at more than 95% at the end of last year. "In 2028, every household, every company and every one of our more than 5,000 start-ups should have access to the gold standard of gigabit networks," said Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey. To this end, the Senate also wants to simplify the approval process for laying the cables. "From March 1, these will no longer have to be applied for, but only reported to the district," Giffey added.
