Mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai bowed out in the first round of the US$1.3 million All England Open Championships 2024 in Birmingham on Wednesday.

The Thai sixth seeds fell to the Malaysian pair of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 14-21, 21-12, 15-21 in the first round of the World Tour Super 1000 event at Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Chen and Toh will play either Mathias Thyrri and Amalie Madelund of Denmark or Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek of Netherlands in the last 16 round today.

Earlier, Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan cruised into the women's singles last 16 after beating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-11, 21-16.

Tai, the three-time champion, will play the winner of the match between Thai star Ratchanok Intanon and Kim Ga-Eun of South Korea.

Michelle Li joined Tai in the last 16 after the Canadian player defeated Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in straight games 21-19, 21-15.

In the men's singles event, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore booked his berth in the last 16 after beating Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-12, 21-17 while Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia advanced with a 21-12, 21-19 victory over Kodai Naraoka of Japan.

Men's doubles pair Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura of Japan defeated Ondrej Kral and Adam Mendrek of Czech Republic 22-20, 21-10.

In the day's big upset, Ye Hong-wei and Lee Chia-hsin of Taiwan knocked out world No.2 pair Seo Seung-Jae and Chae Yu-Jung of South Korea 21-17, 21-10 in the first round of the mixed doubles event.

World champions Seo and Chae were runners-up at the French Open on Sunday.
