Shop in Orkney accidentally orders more Easter eggs than the population of the whole island and is now raffling them off

A remote shop on the Orkney isles made a cracking blunder when they accidentally ordered more Easter eggs than the population of the entire island.

Dan Dafydd, who owns the Sinclair General Stores on the island of Sanday, mistakenly ordered 720 Easter eggs - more than the population of 500 people.

He meant to buy 80 individual chocolate eggs but made an embarrassing error when he mistakenly bought 80 cases instead.

The shop owner is now raffling off 100 eggs to one lucky winner in aid of the RNLI after their Easter egg stock became too much to handle.

Dan said: 'It is mental how it kicked off! I imagine everyone is having a good giggle - which is good!'

Dan explained how he had to conduct a preorder for Easter eggs six months before the annual holiday.

He said: 'I was wanting to order 80 Easter eggs - the deals weren't great so I wanted to get the bare minimum, and we could always add more when the time gets closer.

'I thought nothing more of it - until the delivery truck turned up two weeks ago with a lorry filled with Easter eggs.

'You can imagine my surprise, shock and shame as I realised I had messed up and ordered 80 cases - not 80 singular Easter eggs!'

Dan said they decided to turn the human error into a fundraising initiative for RNLI - a charity close to the hearts of many in the community.

He added: 'We are a small island surrounded by sea, lots of people have died here from boat related incidents, but RNLI serve the community and we have a colleague who works closely with them too.

'So it just made sense to use RNLI - and it has coincided nicely as they are carrying out their 200 year anniversary too.'

The RNLI said they were grateful for the fundraising.

The lifeboat charity said in a statement: 'We're eggstremely grateful to Dan at Sinclair General Stores in Sanday for this incredibly generous gesture after a rather unfortunate delivery of 720 chocolate eggs.'

They added on Twitter: 'Have they over-egged it, or are the the people of Orkney in for a treat this Easter?!

'With 720 Easter eggs for 500 islanders, shop owner Dan Dafydd is scrambling to make space! But, they're turning mishap into kindness by raffling off 100 eggs for the RNLI. Thank you!'

The Orkney Isles lie off the northeastern coast of Scotland. Sanday is the third largest island and can be reached by ferry or plane.

It is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and impressive sand dunes, and has been served by Sinclair General Stores since it opened in 2016.
