Rory McIlroy admits he drunkenly asked Shane Lowry to be his partner for next month's Zurich Classic, as the pair are set to partner up for the team event.

News broke on Monday that the pair would team up for the event, but McIlroy says it came about over a boozy brunch after Europe's Ryder Cup win.

Speaking to Claire Rogers of Golf.com, McIlroy admitted amidst the celebrations of the Ryder Cup, he popped the question to Lowry.

"Very excited I have been excited for a bit. Funny enough, I've known for a bit. I asked him. We had this, like, really drunken lunch after the Ryder Cup last year the week after I said to him 'Do you want to play the Zurich together', so we're like 'Yeah, let's do it.

"His former partner is now on the Champions Tour, Padraig Harrington. I was like, "Hey if you're looking to play and I've never played before so I'm looking forward to it."

The Zurich Classic takes place between April 25-28 which takes place at TPC Louisiana.

McIlroy will be hoping to travel to the event as Masters champion, with the first major of the year just around the corner. It has been an up-and-down year for the Holywood man failing to finish higher than 19th since teeing it up stateside this year, but he did have a win and second-placed finish in Dubai.

Lowry has hit form in America backing up a fourth-placed finish at the Cognizant Classic with a third place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and now sits 34th in the world rankings, having previously fallen outside the world's top 50.
