Vacancy pending on Leetsdale Council

Beth Carroll is stepping down from Leetsdale Council.

The borough posted a notice about the pending vacancy on its website March 21.

It states, in part: “Council anticipates that a vacancy may be created at the April 11 legislative meeting, for the position with term ending 2025.”

Borough Solicitor Dan Conlon confirmed a resignation letter was submitted from a councilperson, but declined to say who it was from.

He said the borough would have 30 days from accepting the resignation to fill the vacancy before it goes to Leetsdale’s vacancy board.

That board has 15 days to appoint someone before a resident can petition Allegheny County Courts to have a judge name a new council person.

Whomever is appointed to fill the vacancy will serve through 2025 and would have to run in that year’s election to keep the seat.

Council President Maria Napolitano also declined to name the elected leader who resigned.

However, council Vice President Osman Awad and Councilman Roger Nanni confirmed it was submitted by Carroll, who is in the third year of her first four-year term.

Both said the resignation was submitted shortly after the March 15 meeting and said her explanation was for “personal reasons.”

Carroll did not respond to emails seeking comment.

“Beth was pretty good,” Awad said. “She helped out a lot in her two years, her and her husband. I appreciate everything she’s done.”

Carroll was the top vote-getter among the Democrats, including Awad and Councilwoman Patricia Lee, who ran for office in 2021.

She was listed on the council’s organization administration committee as well as the parks and recreation/community and public safety/fire committees.

“I will miss Beth dearly,” Lee said via email. “She was a valued member of council and served the community well. She exemplified devotion to the community she calls home through her various projects and efforts that promoted equity, unity and celebrated the rich traditions of Leetsdale and embraced Leetsdale’s bright future.”

Borough Secretary Jennifer Simek did not respond to multiple inquiries about the vacancy.

The borough did not respond to the request as of presstime late March 27.

Residents interested in the position can submit letters of interest to the borough office, 373 Beaver St.
