An Easter egg hunt in a North Wales cemetery has been cancelled after an angry backlash. The Friends of Wrexham Cemetery were planning to hold the egg hunt at the city's historic graveyard, on Ruabon Road, on Wednesday April 3.

On their Facebook page, the Friends group said they thought the event would be a good idea to encourage young people to get interested in "local genealogy" and insisted youngsters would use the paths and would not be "climbing on graves".

However it sparked angry comments underneath with some saying they had relatives buried in the Victorian cemetery which dates back to the 1870s. One comment said "This is extremely disrespectful," while another added "I’m disgusted".

Following the backlash, a further statement from the Friends said: "We as friends of Wrexham Cemetery have had to make an emergency decision to cancel our event to safeguard the young people that were going to participate in the garden and paths of our outdoor museum."
