Speaking to his listeners, Vernon, who is married to Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly, was talking about time capsules.

He read out a letter from a Beeb fan that said: "Hey Vern, can you wish a happy 100th anniversary to the Vernon Building Society in Stockport.”

It led to Vernon speaking about everything Stockport has produced - including wife Tess.

He went on to say: “And as I’m reading this they’re burying a time capsule with pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School containing everything that’s great about Greater Manchester which will be opened in 100 years in 2124.

"None of us will be around when they open that - how crazy is that? It’ll be some other clown sat at a radio station.”

But things went wrong when Vernon added: “If you are going down there, to the burying of the time capsule, enjoy that little bit of p***."

The presenter had meant to say “a little piece of history” before the slip of the tongue gaffe.

Stunned and amused by his swear live on air, the former All Stars Family Fortunes presenter could be heard laughing in the studio.

He then told listeners: “I apologise, slip of the tongue.

“I’m having so much fun today - now I do really need a wee after laughing."

Radio 2 listeners at home caught the blunder as it happened and took to social media to share their reactions.

One said: “Brilliant, slip of the tongue.”
