A TRAVELLER mum has hit back at those in her community who slam the way her daughter dresses.

Tracey King, 50, from Kent, is sick of the notion her 12-year-old daughter shouldn't express herself in her clothing and makeup.

Taking to social media, Tracey shared that she was inundated with comments from others in the traveller community who thought she was too relaxed with Scarlett's style.

Responding to a supportive comment that read: "I'm a gypsy and wear whatever I want, I love Scarlett's style."

The proud mum replied: "We do let her, you know, wear as much as she can.

"I just wanted to say that the last two days, I've had that many messages from travellers, you know, your own people absolutely slating me and telling me what to do with Scarlett and what not to do with Scarlett.

But Tracey revealed she had no time for the haters - especially when it was coming from teenage girls in the community telling her to force her daughter to wear different clothes.

Scarlett typically loves the goth look - opting for jet black hair, dark black eyeshadow, band T-shirts and baggy jeans.

But according to the community - this isn't the style her traveller daughter should be wearing.

So if my child wants to be different, then she can be different

Despite being shunned for her alternative style - Tracey says she won't be making her daughter wear anything she doesn't want to and revealed she wanted a different upbringing for her daughter compared to her own.

She continued: "And this is what is different from me from when I was parented.

"I done as I was told, I wore what I was given. Simple.

I’m a ‘proper’ gypsy because I've finally moved into a caravan with boujee decor & furniture covered in plastic

"We're not in that world anymore, we have progressed to 2024.

"So if my child wants to be different, then she can be different."

Tracey added that at Scarlett's age she was forced to work and that was it - but now Scarlett had more autonomy than that and her mum didn't plan to take it away.

Previously Tracey told Fabulous that she also got in trouble with her community on TikTok.

She said she was going over some of their language - Shelta - but was slammed by others in her community for revealing what certain words mean.

It led the mum to take down the videos.

The clip posted to her account @traceywinter1 has since gone viral with over 28k views.

People were quick to praise the mum for letting Scarlett express herself even if it went against her culture.

One person wrote: "I love the fact scarlet is happy to be herself. its absolutely brilliant."

"She doesn’t have to act around us I would never turn my bk on my kids," replied Tracey.

Differences bettwen a gypsy and a traveller

Typically, Gypsies is a term used to describe Romani people, who migrated to Europe from India.

Meanwhile, traveller refers to a group of people who usually have either Irish, Scottish or English heritage.

While many English gypsy girls are allowed to drink alcohol and go on holiday with their friends before they get married, many Irish traveller girls are not allowed to do this.

Generally, both gypsies and travellers will share a similar moral code.

Another commented: "You are so right about everything!!! We’ve moved with the times but the respect is the same."

"Well said Tracey!! We are all entitled to freedom of choic," penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: "100% you do what's right for your family. Don't listen to the haters. Stay real, and keep being you lovely."

"Long as you're girl happy that's all that matters sod what anyone else thinks,” claimed a fifth.
