The Foreign Office has updated its guidance for USA travel ahead of a rare phenomenon.

The Government department provides information and guidance about risks of travel to any of 226 nations and territories in a bid to help people make informed decisions and stay safe. Updates can include things like security risks, passport and visa requirements, and health warnings, and it is important to be aware of the latest advice.

On Monday, April 8, the Foreign Office added some new guidance ahead of a total solar eclipse set to take place later today.

The alert reads: "On 8 April, parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine will experience a total solar eclipse. All of the US will experience a partial solar eclipse."

People who will be in the US during the solar event are advised to: "check the advice of local authorities in your area. Some counties and cities have issued a state of emergency to prepare for the distribution of increased visitor numbers during the eclipse."

The total solar eclipse will plunge much of the USA into darkness, turning the day skies into night. Flares of the sun's corona will appear like a diamond ring in the sky.

Liverpool will see some coverage at 7.57pm when the sun is basically right on the horizon - the window is very small as the start and end times are 7.55pm and 8pm.
