But it was Barrett who took the victory, folding Gill with two damaging left hooks to the body in the tenth round before the referee stepped in and halted the contest.

Manchester City and England star John Stones watched on from ringside after his side's 5-1 win over Luton Town.

And he would have been delighted with the spectacle that unfolded, with both fighters leaving no stone unturned.

The fight began at a good tempo with Gill taking centre ring, while his rival looked to pick away from the outside in lively opening exchanges.

An intriguing battle continued to unfold in the second and third rounds, with Barrett landing two extremely positive shots, before Gill responded to the end of the period with a sweet left hook.

'The Flash' had a superb fourth stanza, ripping some huge uppercuts into the midriff of Gill, but after briefly being hurt he hit back well in a back and forth encounter.

Things continued at breakneck speed with Gill showing marking around his left eye in the fifth, and things looked very tight as the midway point approached.

A similar pattern continued with a true chess match unfolding, but Gill looked the slightly stronger as the business end of the contest approached.

In the tenth round, Barrett's persistent body work folded Gill in half who crumpled to the canvas in a turning point in the fight.

Gill was able to climb back to his feet and resiliently battle back with shots of his own, but he went down again with another booming left hook to the body.

Gill had been used to defying the odds, given he dispatched of Irish star Michael Conlan in his last outing in December 2023.

But he was unable to overcome the damaging body work despite climbing to his feet, as the referee spared him any more punishment.
