Perhaps reflecting where Liz Truss hopes to sell the most copies of her new book, Seven Weeks in the Salad Spinner, the former Downing Street intern says she “drafted it in American English then translated it back into English English for my British publisher”. This wasn’t just taking the U out of “colour”. Writing in the US version of The Spectator, Truss says that in America “wet Conservatives” are called “squishy”, while she was told to describe herself as “scrappy”, since it is a compliment over there. For those who remember Scooby-Doo’s irritating nephew, it fits her rather well. Truss also explains to Americans the difference between a Tory association rubber chicken supper and a Republican brisket night: “Bigger portions.”
