Dubai floods: airport reopens after UAE suffers 18 months of rain in a day

Waist-deep water is fuelling questions about climate change and cloud seeding in the desert nation

Dubai airport has opened a terminal for incoming flights after two days of disruption from a storm that flooded runways, streets and homes and stranded thousands in the city.

Heavy rain has continued to batter Gulf states, causing deadly flash floods and disrupting flights at the world’s second-busiest airport, which last year served more than 80 million travellers.

The storm on Tuesday led to record rainfall in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly affecting Dubai, where towering skyscrapers and beach resorts attract more than a million British travellers each year.
