Birmingham Airport has urged passengers to check two things ahead of their flight that will mean they dodge delays and potential disruption. Right now, Solihull-based BHX is undergoing huge change to get its new security hall completed in time for June 1.

The "state-of-the-art" security hall upgrade will bring in immediate changes to how passengers queue, transit to airside and carry liquids. The airport confirmed to BirminghamLive they are on track to meet their summer deadline for their security hall upgrade, but some passengers have spoken of confusion over bag-drop times and queues around building works.

Birmingham Airport have outlined two key things to check before you arrive for your flight that may clear up any uncertainty around how much time you need to allow to get through check-in and security checks. The security hall upgrade is essential to get the airport in line with regulations by June 2024, which will end the need to remove liquids and laptops during pre-flight security checks. We asked Birmingham Airport how much time passengers need to allow to make their way through the terminal. The airport advised that arriving too early can actually hinder your journey through to departures, because it can cause customers to wait if their bag-drop has not opened.

Changes to liquid allowances don't come into force until June 1, so travel chiefs also reminded of the importance of preparing your liquids for the security scanners. There are two things that you can check to make sure you have a stress-free experience.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson explained: “Customers should always check with their airline for the best time to arrive at the airport. Check in and bag drop facilities are operated by the airline’s handling agent. Arriving too early may mean the check in is not open, causing customers to wait.

“Also, customers are reminded that existing security rules still apply. All liquids, pastes and gels need to be under 100ml, in a resealable 20x20 transparent bag and all electricals removed out of bags for separate scanning.”
