Traffic is building as one lane remains closed on the M56 after a lorry fire.

Emergency services were called after the vehicle burst into flames on the eastbound carriageway between J14 for Hapsford and J12 for Runcorn of the motorway on Wednesday, April 17 at around 8pm. Fire, police and ambulance crews were all on site.

Drivers were told to avoid the area and a series of diversions were in place. The section of the M56 was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

According to traffic management system Inrix, one lane remains closed due to emergency resurfacing repairs. This is causing queueing and slow traffic this morning.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue said the lorry's driver was "safe and well" and the blaze was put out by firefighters. It is believed the lorry was carrying a quantity of top soil and cardboard waste.

In an update at around 6am today, the fire service said: "By dragging the contents of the lorry onto the carriageway, crews were able to access the burning material and fully extinguish it. The vehicle was removed from the scene shortly before 3am.

"We were in attendance for around seven and a half hours. This morning, one lane of the motorway eastbound remains closed to allow for resurfacing."
