Lewis Hamilton cheekily poked fun at George Russell as the 39-year-old declared he is still "feeling great".

Hamilton was sat next to his younger Mercedes team-mate as he spoke to reporters in Shanghai about his fitness and preparedness despite his relatively advanced age. And he couldn't resist having a dig at his fellow Briton as he did so.

Pointing at Russell, the seven-time F1 champion said: "Nearing 40 years old, I'm feeling young still - I think he's got more problems physically than I do today!" Russell laughed before replying: "Do I?"

And that prompted another joke from Hamilton who responded: "I know you're spending more time with your physio than I am!" before adding: "But, generally, I feel great."

Hamilton was responding to the news that his old rival Fernando Alonso has also agreed to stick around. Aged 42, the Spaniard has agreed a deal that will keep him with Aston Martin until at least the end of 2026.

It ensures Hamilton will still have a rival more senior to him when he begins his Ferrari adventure. The Briton said: "I think it's a real positive because it means I'm not the oldest driver here, but also Fernando is one of the best drivers we've had in the sport.

"So for him to continue to be here and to have the output he's had just shows what is possible. It just shows the new are of athlete and what the human body can do and continue to do if you nurture it."

Hamilton may have been laughing as he cracked a joke at Russell's expense, but he wasn't happy with all the questions he received on Thursday. As it was again pointed out to him that his future team is flying while Mercedes struggle, he snapped: "I don't feel like I need my decision [to leave] vindicating.

"I know what was right for me, and that hasn't changed since the moment that I made the decision. There has not been a moment where I questioned it, and I'm not swayed by other people's comments. Even today, there's people continuing to talk s**t and it will continue on for the rest of the year.

"And I'll have to just do what I did the previous time. Only you can know what's right for you and it will be an exciting time for me."
