Manchester United have been told to follow the example of Liverpool in the transfer window, with former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger saying they have got it ‘completely wrong’ in previous years.

While Liverpool have had success with the majority of transfers under Jurgen Klopp, rivals United have had less success in recent seasons, despite spending large amounts of money on players.

Mason Mount, who joined the club from Chelsea in the summer is one of the signings that has not yet worked out, while the jury is still out on the likes of Antony, who was also a big-money signing during Erik ten Hag's first summer in charge. But throwing money at players is not the way to go, according to Schweinsteiger, who used Liverpool’s transfer dealings as an example.

“Sometimes you spend money completely wrong. You must adapt to how football is changing or not changing and the easiest example where [Manchester] United should have learned out of it – just look over there [Liverpool],” he told The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“What did [Jürgen] Klopp do? Did he sign a lot of huge money transfers? No. Look where he got [Andy] Robertson and others from. He did the same at Borussia Dortmund where we found [Robert] Lewandowski, [Mario] Götze, [Mats] Hummels, [Łukasz] Piszczek, [Jakub] Błaszczykowski, [İlkay] Gündoğan, [Marco] Reus – all those players.

“All you need to do is look 45 miles over and see how Liverpool do it and how long they’ve been dominating for. They are stable, it doesn’t have the wave like United does.”

Last summer, Alexis MacAllister was the big signing for Liverpool with the Argentine joining from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion. So far this season, the 25-year-old has made 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring six times and providing a further seven assists.
