Scotland Yard has been accused of ignoring warnings that new recruits were being bullied by trainers after its commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, refused to meet a whistleblower.

Jill Knight, 66, had been a teacher at the force’s main training centre, Hendon Police College, northwest London, for 12 years and wrote to Rowley’s office last year saying it was “toxic”.

A member of his office accidentally emailed her saying that Rowley “would not meet the individual” before sending a follow-up trying to recall the message.

The Met said on Thursday that the behaviour she faced was “disgraceful” and it had disciplined a number of staff.
