To celebrate National Picnic Day, the Mall at Robinson is teaming with YaJagoff! to host a strawberry pretzel Jell-O salad standoff on Sunday.

We’ve made it to another weekend. Here are some ways to get out of the house and enjoy it.

Kennywood’s open!

Kennywood Park will open for the season this Saturday. Visiting the amusement park has been a tradition for families in the Pittsburgh region for generations. The park boasts new concessions and new Potato Smash Bumper Cars, but not the Steel Curtain this year.

Kennywood will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets purchased online during the opening ticket sale are as low as $37.49, and guests can save up to $30 on season passes by buying online for a limited time.

The Other Art Festival

The third annual springtime Shadyside art festival will take place Saturday and Sunday on Walnut Street. For art lovers, there’s a little bit of everything — paintings, pottery, photography, jewelry and other mediums. More than 100 artists will be represented.

The festival also features a craft marketplace with a wide array of wares for sale, like soaps, apparel, decor and a “green market.”

Admission to the self-guided art walk is free. Parking on cross streets off of Walnut Street is available, including the garage on Bellefonte Street. Leashed and friendly pets are welcome.

Wild Earth Day at the Pittsburgh Zoo

This Saturday, celebrate Earth Day early at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Pittsburgh Earth Day, Green Voice and the zoo will host a fun and educational day to appreciate — and learn about — our wild world.

The event will be spread throughout the zoo and is included with zoo admission. Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., it features live music, art, educational booths and more. The event will highlight some of the region’s greenest companies and organizations. It will even feature an appearance by the Pittsburgh Pirates Parrot.

Steel City Duck Derby

The third annual Steel City Duck Derby and Family Duck Fest will take place Saturday at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side. Attendees can purchase rubber ducks beforehand (or at the event, while supplies last) that will be launched into Lake Elizabeth during the derby. The owners of the top five finishing ducks will win a prize. First prize is $2,000.

Ducks are $5 each, or can be bought in increments of six, 12 or 24 online at a cheaper per-duck price. Funds raised benefit the nonprofit family of agencies Partners for Quality.

The Family Duck Fest begins at 11 a.m. and the Duck Derby launches at 1 p.m.

Strawberry Jell-O Pretzel Salad Standoff

Can’t get enough of this delicious dessert? To celebrate National Picnic Day, the “Ya Jagoff!” podcast will host the third annual Strawberry Jell-O Pretzel Salad Standoff on Sunday at The Block Northway. Local businesses will bring their version of this regional delicacy and attendees can taste — and judge — for themselves.

Samples are first come, first served. Participating businesses will be judged by the attendees, as well as a panel of judges. The winner will receive a stipend for the charity they’re paired with. Participating businesses include Nothing Bundt Cakes, Cookie Cookie Ice Cream, Mary Mac Bakehouse, Crumbl Cookies and more.

The event is held from 1 to 3 p.m. Check out the Facebook event here for more information.
