People across the UK are having a lightbulb moment as they discover what the 'D' in DFS actually stands for - and it's not related to sofas at all. Known for its omnipresent sofa adverts and widespread stores, DFS is a household name when it comes to buying new furniture, proudly calling themselves "The Sofa Experts".

The brand is also favoured by many families for its finance options, making it an accessible choice for those looking to spruce up their living spaces.

Yet, the origin of the DFS name remains a mystery to many. Contrary to assumptions, it doesn't reference sofas but instead harks back to its roots as the Doncaster Furniture Store, reflecting its South Yorkshire heritage.

The journey of DFS began modestly over 50 years ago, situated above a snooker hall in Doncaster, and has since expanded to 118 showrooms nationwide.

While it maintains a strong showroom presence, DFS has largely transitioned to the digital space. The enterprise was originally launched by Graham Kirkham as Northern Upholstery in 1969 from a single location, reports the Express.

In 1983, the company rebranded to DFS Furniture Limited and by 2003, it had grown to become the leading retailer in the UK's upholstery sector.
