Shoppers have criticised M&S for selling something for £2 that they can get for free elsewhere.

The retailer is selling small 50g tubs of chip shop scraps for two quid, which works out at £40 per kilogram.

A photo of the product was shared on the Feed your family for about £20 a week Facebook page, where savvy shopper Lorna Cooper said: "I can't believe that 1) M&S are selling these and 2) that they are charging £2 for a tiny tub! We used to get these free from the chippy when we were kids lol."

And she wasn't the only one to make the remark. Within just a few hours of her sharing the post, hundreds of shoppers had commented, many of them saying they too used to get them for free, with some saying they still do.

"Used to be 5p when I was a child (late 70’s early 80’s)," said one. "Great when you were starving from playing out all day."

"Go to the local chippy and get a bag full for free and they’re fresh so they’ll taste much better," said another.

While a third added: "We still get them for free from chippy shops near me!"

Described as 'scraps of our light and crispy batter' the tubs are found in the fridge section of M&S Food Halls.

It's not the first time the retailer has come under fire for selling the product. Shoppers hit out when they were first launched in 2020, when an 80g pack was being sold for £1.05.

M&S was accused of 'insulting the north', with one critic saying: "Don’t know what’s worse, calling them ‘Scraps’ or charging for them!"

A spokesperson for M&S told the Manchester Evening News: “Our chip shop scraps have proved popular with customers up and down the country since launching back in 2018. Many enjoy as part of their chippy tea, and we also know some customers enjoy sprinkling across a variety of meals, including adding texture to a salad.”
