Taylor Swift breaks Spotify’s record for most-streamed album in a single day

Her latest album had more than 300M streams on the day of its release

Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department has broken new records for Spotify, the streaming giant has said.

Her critically-acclaimed new album became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day on Friday while Ms Swift became the most-streamed artist in a single day in the company’s history.

Further records were also broken yesterday, including the first album in Spotify’s history to have more than 300M streams in a single day and most-streamed song in a single day.

Ms Swift has described her new album as “anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time – one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.”

The US pop superstar surprised fans on Friday by releasing a secret “double album”, dubbed The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.

It contains an extra 15 tracks including “The Black Dog”, which is thought to be a reference to a pub in the same name in Vauxhall, south London. The original album has 16 tracks.

A day after the albums were released, Swift unveiled the first music video for her single Fortnight featuring US rapper and singer Post Malone.

The video appears to tell the tale of star-crossed lovers set in a dystopian romance.

Outlining the video, she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “When I was writing the Fortnight music video, I wanted to show you the worlds I saw in my head that served as the backdrop for making this music.  Pretty much everything in it is a metaphor or a reference to one corner of the album or another. For me, this video turned out to be the perfect visual representation of this record and the stories I tell in it.

“Post Malone blew me away on set as our tortured tragic hero and I’m so grateful to him for everything he put into this collaboration. I’m still laughing from getting to work with the coolest guys on earth, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles (tortured poets, meet your colleagues from down the hall, the dead poets).

“The entire crew made this a dream to shoot. Thank you to everyone involved and everyone who has watched it!”

Swift, who is known for taking inspiration from past relationships for her music, is thought to have drawn on her break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn when writing her latest album.

Meanwhile, fans have also speculated a number of her tracks reference her blossoming romance with NFL star Travis Kelce.
