Two Premier League footballers from the same team have reportedly been arrested in relation to an allegation of rape.

One of the players is reported to have been arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape and left the stadium following a brief interview. The Sun report that the 19-year-old later spent the night behind bars after formally being arrested and was questioned by detectives under caution.

Reports then claim his team-mate, who is the same age, was arrested the following day and questioned on suspicion of rape, which allegedly took place on Friday night. The police confirmed the players have been released on bail pending further enquiries, according to reports.

A police spokesperson told the Sun: “Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape. A 19 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both men have since been released on police bail.”

Insiders at the club where the two players play claim that talks have already begun over the “next steps”. It is not known whether they've been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

A club spokesman told the publication: “As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the Football Club will not be making further comment at this stage.”
