Tories ‘obsessed’ by council house sale tax, says Angela Rayner

Deputy Labour leader spars with Oliver Dowden as she accuses government of dragging its heels over rental reforms

Angela Rayner has issued a fresh defence of her tax affairs, claiming the Conservatives are “obsessing” over the issue and branding the prime minister a “pint-sized loser”.

The deputy Labour leader is facing a police investigation after senior Tories accused her of breaking electoral law and questioned whether she should have paid up to £3,500 of capital gains tax on profits from her former council house, which she sold in 2015.

Rayner, 44, anticipated questions about her tax affairs, saying in her opening remarks in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon that Conservative MPs were “desperate to talk about my living arrangements”.

Rayner was speaking at prime minister’s questions, where she was standing in for Sir Keir Starmer. Oliver Dowden, the deputy prime minister, was standing
