NORTHFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) - Norwich University’s new president is expected to take the reins next month.

Officials say that the school’s board on Friday elected Lt. Gen. John Broadmeadow, USMC Retired, as the 25th president.

The school initially announced Broadmeadow’s selection in January, just days after former president Mark Anarumo stepped down amid allegations of violating school policies. Broadmeadow’s appointment was then delayed following concerns over an unnamed medical condition.

They say the selection of Broadmeadow, a member of the class of 1983, tops a few firsts for the country’s oldest private military academy. He is the highest-ranking Marine officer to ever graduate, is the first Marine to become president, and is the highest-ranking officer ever to be named president.

“John Broadmeadow is the right person at the right time for Norwich,” board chair Alan DeForest said in a statement. “His exceptional combination of personal connection to Norwich, his work as a Board of Trustees member, and lifetime of continued service to the University uniquely positions him to step into the leadership role as the 25th president of Norwich University.”
