The final stretch of the season is underway and Manchester United find themselves attempting to finish on a positive note.

It was another dramatic evening against Sheffield United on Wednesday but the Red Devils found their way past the Blades and now find their attention turn to Burnley at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag's side sit in sixth in the Premier League and they will hope to earn Europa League football next term via that position or FA Cup success.

Injuries have not made things easy for the Dutch coach, who could welcome back Mason Mount this weekend. There will be little room for excuses as he is assessed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS until the end of the season.

With all of that said, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news as United prepare for the final month of 2023/24.

United confident over top target

Manchester United have identified Jarred Branthwaite as their 'top target' and are confident of landing the Everton defender by the end of June according to reports.

The Red Devils are said to expect a bid of between £60million and £70m to be enough to land the Toffees star as his club seek to comply with profit and sustainability rules having received points deductions this season.

Branthwaite is under contract until 2027 after signing a new deal last year and has made 36 appearances this term. The 21-year-old most recently scored against Liverpool and helped his side to a clean sheet as he earned a victory in the Merseyside derby.

Old Trafford update

Speaking at Manchester United's Fans' Forum, Chief Operating Officer Collette Roche explained the two options the club are looking at in their stadium plans.

She explained: "The first option is to redevelop the current stadium, which would focus primarily on building a new world-class South Stand, as well as refurbishment of the other three stands."

"The alternative would be to build a new stadium on our footprint, which could significantly increase capacity, and deliver a world-leading stadium and experience for fans, the team, and other stakeholders.” Roche added.

The taskforce working on the project is expected to make a recommendation later this year. There is a programme of improvements planned for Old Trafford over this summer, including the expansion of rail seating.

What Bruno Fernandes attempted for debutant Ethan Wheatley

The Portuguese midfielder revealed he spent the final minutes of United's win over Sheffield Wednesday trying to find an assist for young teammate Ethan Wheatley. The teenager, fresh from winning the under-18 Premier League Cup 24 hours before, made his debut in the second period at Old Trafford.

"I think at the end of the game I got a little too erratic to give him (Wheatley) a goal because, like I said, he's a young kid coming through the academy and I know the moment is massive for him," Fernandes told MUTV.

"Getting a goal in his first appearance would have been massive. I couldn't give the assist, but I tried and at moments rushed it a little bit too much."
