A paedophile has been jailed for a series of child sex offences dating back decades. Christopher Walkman of Swadlincote, Derbyshire carried out indecent assaults on a girl under 16 more than 20 years ago in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire.

The 64-year-old was quizzed by Staffordshire Police officers in August 2020 after his victim came forward and told police what happened. The force then started to build its case against him and charged him with seven indecent assaults.

Walkman appeared at Stafford Crown Court on January 16 this year and was found guilty following a trial of seven counts of indecent assault. And this week he was jailed for a total of 12 years with an extended license period of one year at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Wednesday (April 24).

Detective Constable Scott Martin, who investigated the case, said: “Without the bravery and support of the survivor, this conviction would not have been possible and no one would have known about Walkman’s crimes.

“I hope this serves as a message to all survivors of sexual offences that they will be listened to and heard by specialist officers who are passionate about stopping those responsible.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson added: “We are committed to working alongside our partners to deliver the toughest enforcement available to those found guilty of sexual crimes. We’ve already undertaken a significant amount of work in this area and we’re committed to continuing to make progress and supporting those affected by it.
