A make-up artist warns you could be unintentionally adding a terrifying ten years to your physical appearance just by using the wrong products.

Most people who use it will agree that make-up helps them to feel and look better. It can enhance your natural beauty, even out skin tone and accentuate your features, boosting confidence and self-esteem.

Whether it's a light dusting of powder and lipgloss to nip to the local shop or a full-on glam face for a night out on the town, make-up is used to improve our appearance - at least it should be.

A beauty expert has warned that there are common mistakes people make when it comes to applying products that could be adding a decade to their appearance - definitely not the desired effect.

Makeup artist Wayne Goss says although people think they are delaying the effects of time making up their face, many are guilty of doing anything but. He explains: "The majority of us will be using make-up to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we've gained over the years. However, due to some mistakes, the make-up that we're wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face."

Wayne, who currently has over 4million subscribers on YouTube and 700k+ Instagram followers, says there are usually three mistakes that are made and reveals how to combat the biggest errors to keep your youth intact. He reveals the main things to be wary of are:

Avoid metallic eyeshadow

"Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte," the expert advises. "Matte generally works best as it doesn't draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases." Wayne launched his First Edition Collection brushes last year that were an instant sell-out, and he says brushes, not fingers, are important in achieving a perfect blend with your eyeshadow. "Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as it's easier to blend with a good quality brush," he says. "Never blend eyeshadow with a finger - good quality brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines.

Choose your concealer wisely

Using the wrong shade of concealer could be making you look older and it's a mistake lots of people make: "Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face," he warns. "So it's really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone.

"Cream concealer is always recommended above liquids, and I'd highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that's the one part of the eye that doesn't crease."

Always hydrate and use a primer

Skin that is too dry will naturally make you appear older, so it's important to make sure you are using the right products and moisturising. "As we get older, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as you get into your older age," Wayne reveals.

There's a magic ingredient you should keep an eye out for in the products you are using: "Look for make-up with ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid when you're on your next make-up and skincare shopping haul to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated," he says.

Your skin also needs to be prepped before you even start adding your favourite make-up too: "Before you start applying anything to your face, ensure that you’ve applied a heavy moisturiser to ensure your skin stays hydrated," he continues. "Use a good primer before you start applying your make-up to ensure it'll act as a barrier between your skin and your make-up to help the make-up stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines."
