SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse surrendered four runs in the eighth inning to lose, 7-3, to No. 15 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
The Orange (24-21, 6-14 ACC) leveled the game at three in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extras. Cori McMillan hit a three-run homer in extras for the Hokies (38-10-1, 18-5 ACC), one of three longballs for the visitors.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH:
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Syracuse plated a pair in the frame for the 2-1 advantage. With pinch runner Gabby Lantier on second and one out, graduate student Rebecca Clyde sliced the 1-2 offering from Virginia Tech starter Emma Mazzarone up the middle to tie the game at one. Three batters later, Clyde scored on a wild pitch.
The Hokies retook the lead the next half inning, hitting back-to-back solo homers. Syracuse did not go away, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh for sophomore Madelyn Lopez. Lopez collected an infield single to the shortstop to draw level at three. The Orange were unable to plate another run, sending the game to extras.
Virginia Tech had its first two batters reach before McMillan hit her second home run of the series. The Hokies added an insurance marker later in the frame on an RBI groundout.
Sophomore Madison Knight started for Syracuse, tossing all eight innings. Mazzarone threw six innings and was replaced by Lindsey Grein in the seventh after allowing the leadoff walk.
