Werner appeared to have a muscle issue and had to make way, with Brennan Johnson coming on as his replacement.

It was the 28-year-old's tenth Premier League start for the club, with Ange Postecoglou trusting in his quality.

But it now remains to be seen if he will be without Werner in the final weeks of the season amid his injury.

It summed up a torrid first-half for Spurs who went behind after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg headed into his own net from a corner.

The hosts thought they equalised through Micky van de Ven but the defender was adjudged to be offside and the goal was ruled out.

Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal's lead before Kai Havertz added the third on the approach to half-time.

Spurs dominated the first-half in terms of possession but it was the Gunners who took their chances to sail in front.

Saka and Havertz were not shy to revel in their success in front of the home fans, with the former cupping his ears and the latter offering a shush gesture.

Cristian Romero pulled one back for Spurs just after the hour mark when he capitalised on David Raya's poor pass.

They then reduced the deficit to just one goal as Heung-min Son scored a penalty following Declan Rice's foul on Ben Davies.

However, Spurs were unable to complete what would have been a sensational comeback as Arsenal held onto all three points.

The win has taken them back to the top of the table and four points ahead of Manchester City, although they have two games in hand.
