For Paris Saint-Germain, the Champions League has become an obsession.

The club from the French capital have won 10 Ligue 1 titles since they were bought by Qatar Sports Investments in 2008. Yet they have continually fallen short in Europe and are still awaiting their first continental crown.

The signing of Neymar for a world-record fee in 2017 marked the start of PSG’s move towards a galactico model of recruitment. That eventually culminated in a front three comprising the Brazilian, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

That forward line did not lack stardust, but it led to the team becoming unbalanced and dysfunctional. In their two seasons together as a triumvirate, PSG were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 on both occasions.

Neymar and Messi have now departed, and Mbappe looks set to follow suit this summer. With his contract up in June, the Real Madrid-bound Frenchman could in theory face his future employers in his last game for PSG - the Champions League final.

With an embrace of younger players and the promotion of their fruitful academy, PSG are going in a different direction. 

This was intended to be a transition season under Luis Enrique, who took charge last summer. Yet PSG are now a very winnable semi-final away from an appearance in the biggest game of European football.

The Parisians were up against it halfway through their quarter-final against Barcelona. After a 3-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes, they then conceded the opening goal in the reverse fixture.

Yet while the sending-off of Barca defender Ronald Araujo undoubtedly proved to be the turning point, PSG deserve massive credit for scoring four goals without response to progress to the last four.

They start this tie as strong favourites, but Luis Enrique will have spent recent days preaching the importance of humility, especially in the first meeting at Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund will hope the backing of a raucous home crowd swings this match in their favour.

Borussia Dortmund had to dig deep to overcome Atletico Madrid in the last round, coming from 4-3 down on aggregate to win 5-4.

Their home form has been vital throughout this Champions League campaign. They are yet to be beaten at Signal Iduna Park, home to one of the continent’s best atmospheres, in this competition in 2023/24.

PSG will fancy their chances of triumphing at Parc des Princes come what may, so it is vital that Dortmund register a home win in the first leg.

However, we fancy PSG to get the job done on their travels. Luis Enrique likes to dominate possession whenever possible, but his attacking players - Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in particular - can cause huge problems in transition on Wednesday.

Dortmund’s defence is not among the strongest in Europe. They shipped four goals to RB Leipzig at the weekend, plus four to Atletico across two legs.

Dortmund are hardly unbeatable at home either: Bayern Munich won 4-0 there in November, while Leipzig, Hoffenheim and Stuttgart also departed with all three points in the Bundesliga.

The first goal could be vital on Wednesday. If Borussia Dortmund are the scorers, it will give them the confidence to go at PSG, whose mentality has been called into question on numerous occasions in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

If PSG draw first blood, it would temporarily silence the home crowd and ram home the message that Dortmund are huge underdogs in this semi-final.

It is hard to read too much into PSG’s results in Ligue 1 given the financial disparity between the champions and the rest, but Luis Enrique’s men have won five away games on the bounce in all competitions.

PSG may look to soak up pressure initially, but they should still be able to create chances against a Dortmund defence that is not exactly watertight.

The establishment of a 1-0 lead would force Dortmund to take more risks in search of an equaliser, so there is sufficient incentive for PSG to commit bodies to attack when the situation calls for it.

Mbappe’s future lies with Real Madrid but for now he will be fully focused on bringing the Champions League trophy to Paris.

He has been left out of the team in Ligue 1 at times in recent weeks, with Luis Enrique keen to plan for life after Mbappe.

But in the Champions League, he has continually stepped up. As well as scoring when PSG beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the group phase (the return game was a 1-1 draw), he notched three goals against Real Sociedad in the last 16, before finding the back of the net in the 4-1 victory over Barcelona on the road.

Mbappe is not only the most talented player available to either side; he is the most decisive too. The 25-year-old can make the difference on Wednesday.
