Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabang Monare could leave Orlando Pirates at the end of the season.

Bucs set to lose experienced stars

34-year-old Thabang Monarehas been a stalwart for Pirates since joining in 2020 from Wits. joined Pirates in October 2020 from Bidvest Wits. He’s clocked up 93 appearances for the Sea Robbers, scooping three MTN8 titles and a Nedbank Cup. He was also part of the Bafana Bafana squad at Afcon that reached the semi-finals and eventually claimed the bronze model in Cote d’Ivoire.

Minutes have dried up for Monare

Thabang Monare has only featured for 22 minutes of action since returning from Afcon. Jose Riveiro has a wealth of midfield options at his disposal. Right now, Makhehlene Makhaula, Miguel Timm and Thalente Mbatha are all ahead of the former Jomo Cosmos man in the engine room pecking order. If this is Monare’s final season with the Buccaneers, he’d love to go out in style by helping them to Nedbank Cup glory for the second consecutive season. Monare has 11 league appearances this term, indicative of his waning status within the first team. He has four caps for the national team.

Orlando Pirates mean business

It’s crunch time in another potentially glorious campaign for the Buccaneers. They’ve already defended their MTN8 crown and are two matches away from doing the same in the Nedbank Cup. Jose Riveiro’s charges face Cape Town City next but they’ll be without the in-form Patrick Maswanganyi and midfield anchor Makhehlene Makhaula through suspensions. Kickoff between the Citizens and the Sea Robbers on Wednesday 1 May is at 15:00. Man of the moment Maswanganyi has nine goals and 10 assists in 32 outings. That’s a stellar return for the 26-year-old, and he’ll be difficult to replace for this clash. He should return for Pirates for their Nedbank Cup semi-final trip to Chippa on Saturday 4 May. Could Monare feature in this clash because of Makhaula’s enforced absence?
