The bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion in a Leeds street after a suspected explosive device was discovered.

Smeaton Approach in Manston was closed while police, firefighters and paramedics attended the incident near a building site. Officers have been in attendance this afternoon (Wednseday, May 1) ever since the unexploded device was discovered.

The Bomb Disposal unit was drafted in and a controlled explosion was carried out. In a statement West Yorkshire Police said all roads have now reopened.

A spokesman said: "At 8.33am today (Wednesday), police received a report of a suspicious object which had been found on land at the junction of Leeds Road and Smeaton Approach, Leeds. A cordon was put in place and nearby roads were closed while officers liaised with the Explosive Ordance Disposal (EOD) team.

"The EOD attended and carried out a controlled explosion of the object on site a short time later. The cordon has now been lifted and roads have been reopened. "
