A man has been charged with murder after a series of stabbings in Hainault on Tuesday that left a teenage boy dead.
Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, 36, was charged with the murder of Daniel Anjorin, 14. He will appear at Barkingside magistrates court on Thursday.
Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian dual national, has also been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. The families of all those affected have been informed.
The charges were authorised by the homicide division of the Crown Prosecution Service and followed an investigation by the Metropolitan police.
Jaswant Narwal, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan police to charge Marcus Arduini Monzo with the murder of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who was fatally stabbed in Hainault on Tuesday April 30. Our thoughts remain firmly with the family of the Daniel and all those who have been impacted by this horrific incident.
“We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that they have a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Police said they were called on Tuesday shortly before 7am after a vehicle was reported to have collided with a house in Thurlow Gardens, Hainault, east London.
Police said a suspect armed with a sword then stabbed people during a series of attacks, wounding two police officers, who sustained significant injuries, and two members of the public.
The suspect was arrested 22 minutes after the first call to police and was detained after being shot with a Taser, a stun gun that some officers are authorised to carry. The suspect was then taken to hospital having been injured when his vehicle struck a house.
Speaking on Tuesday before the victim was named, Ch Supt Stuart Bell said: “It is with great sadness that I confirm one of those injured, a 14-year-old boy, has died. He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died shortly afterwards.
“The child’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. Everyone across the Met is keeping them in our thoughts at this unimaginably difficult time.”
The Met said earlier on Tuesday: “We were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area. There were reports people had been stabbed. At this time we understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers.”
On Wednesday, Sir Mark Rowley, the Met commissioner, gave details of the injuries that the two officers sustained. One officer needed emergency surgery to save the use of her hand, he told LBC Radio.
Rowley, who had visited the two officers in hospital, said: “I was talking to the family and colleagues of the woman officer, who’s really badly damaged [her] arm, really seriously damaged and the surgeon spent … many, many hours basically putting her arm back together. It will be a long journey of recovery.”
He said an inspector suffered injuries that left his hand “badly damaged”.
Daniel Anjorin attended the same school as one of the victims of an attack in Nottingham in 2023. He was a student at the private Bancroft’s school in Woodford Green, whose former pupil, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, was stabbed to death in June.
